Customised training plans, proven methods, and 12+ years of experience helping runners achieve their ultra goals.
Get StartedMy main role involves coaching long distance trail runners (ultra runners) mostly within the UK. I've been lucky enough to be a full-time ultra running coach since 2014, and have now worked with hundreds of runners.
To work within my passion for long distance is something I truly am grateful for — a dream realised.
Ultimately, as your coach I provide you with an online customised and progressive training programme, supported by proven coaching methods, experience and results.
I want to see you enjoying your running. If the coaching does not enhance your enjoyment and experience of training and running, we've got it wrong!
— Ronnie
Beginner ultra runners — potentially training for their first ultra distance.
Experienced ultra runners — looking for performance improvements or just more enjoyment and longevity in the long game.
Ultra runners who enjoy working on the "normal" distances too — and some that don't!
Top-end elites — the world beaters!
I of course help individuals find their potential, but I do not coach highly elite runners, as I have not been an elite (super fast) runner personally — so I lack that elite insight at a personal level.
If you are looking to run a sub 14-hour 100 mile, for example, there are better-placed coaches than me for such high-level performance.
On most of these events I've worked with multiple runners over the years to successful finishes.
In general, the 50 mile / 100k / 100 mile trail distances are most popular — too many races to list at those standard distances!
Plus countless 50-milers, 100Ks, and 100-mile trail races across the UK and beyond.
My coaching approach is designed to provide detailed support primarily through online means — Training Peaks, Messages, Email — which allows me to work with a group of runners while maintaining the quality of the training plans and feedback.
While I don't offer regular phone calls as part of the service, I want to assure you that I'm always available to help and provide feedback online.
There are times when a phone call might make sense — such as if we're preparing for a big event, if there's a significant shift in your training plan, or if it feels like a more in-depth conversation would be beneficial for your progress.
I host monthly group Zoom coaching calls where all coached runners are welcome to log in and ask questions. If you can't make the call, you can email me your questions ahead of time, and I'll answer them during the session — which is recorded and sent out — so you don't have to attend live.
“I came to Ronnie with a goal to complete the full Winter Spine Race after three failed attempts. He created a programme that got me to the start line in great shape and confident. 268 miles later, a lifetime ambition had been fulfilled.”
“I signed up for coaching with the goal of toeing the line at my first 200 mile ultramarathon. I knew I needed a down to earth coach who understood what it would take to participate in an event like this, and who would be able to tailor a plan to get me there without overtraining and risking injury. Ronnie provided all of that and more - I felt seen and heard, and really appreciated the depth of experience Ronnie brings. I would not have had the confidence to tackle an event like the Wildhorse 200 without his support.”
“I would highly recommend Ronnie’s coaching. He wasn’t phased by my decision to do the Dragons Back as my first ultra and coached me through injury, naivety and over confidence to successfully complete it. Ronnie always provides insightful advice and subtle tweaks to help you achieve whatever you set your mind to.”
“Ronnie has helped me have a more varied and focused training plan. He has guided me to be more selective with events and focus on quality over quantity. Ronnie is incredibly motivational and gives me as much attention and support as any runner he coaches. This has given me greater confidence and belief in what I can achieve.”
I live in Lincoln with my wife and three children. Over a decade later I'm still enjoying running and coaching, and I'm always grateful to the runners that have trusted me to be their coach.
Christmas Eve 2018 I suffered a massive stroke that I was lucky to survive. Recovery was far from easy, but I made a strong comeback and now volunteer for the Stroke Association.
I'm 45 years old and my life is deeply rooted in trail running — my running, my coaching, and HOBO Pace. Long may it continue.
